Anthology and Monograph
While there is extensive research defining Irish, Welsh, and Scottish Gothic traditions, there has hitherto been relatively little working to define the Cornish Gothic. My monograph, Cornish Gothic (UWP, 2022) will define the genre, uncover Cornwall's obfuscated literary histories, and broaden our understanding of the significance of regionality to the Victorian Gothic. It considers authors including Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, Thomas Hardy, Wilkie Collins, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Ellen Wood, and Margery Williams, to name but a few. Chapters focus on the history of mining and the Gothic; seascapes and shipwrecks; early Gothic tourism; folklore, folkhorror and the Gothic; Cornish ghost stories; and the railway in Gothic fiction.
In summer 2021 my anthology of tales uncovered throughout my research will be released as part of the British Library's Tales of the Weird series - Cornish Horrors: Tales from the Land's End.
